Thank you for supporting STOP-AIDS.com.
Stop-AIDS is an initiative of the United Nations to raise resources for combating AIDS world wide.

STOP-AIDS aims to partner with a variety of people and organizations to increase worldwide attention to the AIDS epidemic.

It seeks contributions from individuals and institutions to contribute to various projects being supported by the United Nations across the world.

STOP-AIDS is a partnership between Formula 1 racing company SAUBER PETRONAS and two United Nations institutions - the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Our aim is to spread HIV/AIDS awareness messages and to mobilise resources for AIDS-related projects in countries worst-affected by the disease.

SAUBER PETRONAS is placing a red ribbon symbolizing AIDS and the message STOP-AIDS on its racing cars in three Grand Prix races on three continents - Monza (Italy), Indianapolis (USA) and Suzuka (Japan).

Individuals and institutions have the opportunity to contribute to two projects that provide housing and care to AIDS orphans in Botswana, the country with the highest HIV prevalence rate in the world.

38.8% of adults aged 15-49 are infected with the virus.
- Life expectancy is expected to fall to 36 years by 2005.
- Income for the poorest quarter of households in Botswana will drop by 13% over the next ten years as a result of HIV/AIDS.
- By 2021 GDP in Botswana will be 24-38 % less than it would have been without HIV/AIDS

AIDS orphans are Botswana's highest population of youth-at-risk. There are 69,000 orphans who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS and that number could rise to 120,000 by 2010.

Most of the orphans have no access to basic human needs such as food, clothing, toiletries and shelter. Their opportunities for growth and development are also limited due to household poverty. Their access to education and recreation is also at stake as caregivers cannot afford related costs and orphans are overburdened by domestic responsibilities.

The United Nations Development Programme is supporting various HIV/AIDS projects in Botswana. The two projects described below aim to provide basic services for orphans.

THE HOUSE OF HOPE, Palapye district

Opened in 1999 to deal with the after effects of AIDS The House of Hope project provides education, training and welfare services for about 50 AIDS orphans. Most of these children have lost their parents to AIDS related illnesses and some may even be HIV positive. Based in Palapye district where an estimated 40% of pregnant women are HIV-positive, the centre also aims to promote change and find alternative ways of living for people involved in risky behaviour.

MAUN COUNSELLING CENTER, Ngamiland district

This day care center was created in 1999 as a community means to support orphans and their extended families that are in desperate circumstances. The centre provides 35 orphans with a warm and welcoming environment within which to develop and grow. Children are provided with food, care and support in their physical, mental, moral, emotional and social development while still remaining part of their extended families. Regular visits from the day care center workers will support extended families in caring for orphans through counseling, food and clothing assistance.
